As Craig Babbert surfed through television channels during a sleepless night, he stopped at a show on cosmetic dentistry.
That show eventually led him to undergo a smile makeover by Dr. Sharon Schindler of Schindler Dentistry on Olentangy Street in Powell.
Babbert, co-owner of Jersey Construction Services in Columbus, had a full-mouth restoration in two stages in February and March.
"When I meet someone, the first thing I notice is their teeth and I thought maybe people judge me that way. I grind my teeth, too, so they were in pretty bad shape," Babbert says. "Dr. Schindler did a lot of work. She corrected my overbite and some crooked teeth," of his full mouth restoration.
The 48-year old Columbus resident is among a growing number of people turning to cosmetic dentistry.
While not an American Dental Association specialty like periodontics or orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry is a rapidly growing segment of general dentistry that requires training beyond dental school.
The association says 84 percent of dentists offer cosmetic procedures, and about half report a steady increase in the number of cosmetic procedures performed over the last three years.
"It's natural development that combines cosmetic techniques with scientific dental diagnosis. Patients need a complete examination to determine the proper treatment that takes into consideration their cosmetic request," says Dr. William Davis of Garvey and Davis Cosmetic Dentistry in Dublin. "During any cosmetic procedure, though, it's important to preserve the natural tooth structure as much as possible. It's about longevity and functionality, as well as improved aesthetics."
Doctors tell us that even our teeth don't escape the aging process.
"As we age, our teeth start to show wear. They become yellow, shorten in length and sometimes chip. The bite closes as the distance between the nose and chin decreases. Smile makeovers definitely produce a more youthful looking smile," Schindler says.
