THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The standard fish tank in the lobby is a meager accouterment compared with the extravagance accentuating dental practices these days.
Spalike services are bubbling up to help patients overcome phobias and discomfort.
Amenities range from cookies and cappuccino to hand-wax treatments.
"I have never felt so pampered," said patient Jean Watren, reclining on an upholstered chaise lounge between procedures at Schindler Dentistry in Powell.
Tucked beneath a blanket, the 70-year-old retired federal employee snacked on cookies and sipped a berry protein shake in a pose better suited to the front porch than the exam room.
"This is really nice," Watren said. "It certainly isn't like other dental offices I have been to."
Patients at Schindler dip their hands into moist, hot wax to begin appointments. They order coffee, shakes and snacks from laminated menus and sniff scented candles and aromatherapy oils.
In the treatment chairs, they rest on vibrating massage pads while listening to music through headphones or watching movies on DVD players.
"We are trying to eliminate every negative aspect of the dental visit." dentist Sharon Schindler said.
Vicky Elgin actually looks forward to her appointments.
"Who normally says they want to go to the dentist?" said the 34-year-old mother of two. "I forget where I am when I'm here. I don't feel like I'm having my teeth cleaned."
The dental "spa" or "boutique" is an increasingly popular concept throughout the nation and central Ohio.
